How to Customize and Format Signals for Efficient Business Operations

Updated over a year ago

Why Customize Signals?

Customizing signals is an essential tool for streamlining operations workflows and responding quickly to critical business events. An effective signal must include all necessary information while being formatted in an easy-to-read style that anyone within your organization can understand.

By taking the time to customize your signals, you can ensure consistent communication across various teams while highlighting key data based on the subscriber type. This helps minimize confusion and ensures everyone has access to the right information at the right time.

Customization Options

Here are all of the available options you can utilize when looking to customize your signals:

Aggregate Changes

The 'Aggregate Changes' feature is available in all types of monitors and can be turned on to group identical signals generated by the monitor into one signal with a count of occurrences. This option is particularly useful when dealing with large quantities of similar signals that could potentially generate an excess amount of noise. By condensing multiple signals into one, notifications are reduced and valuable time is saved.

Signal Title & Body

Signal Titles and Bodies can be enriched using Markdown and Template Variables.

  • Markdown:

    • Markdown is a streamlined text formatting syntax that was created to enhance readability and simplify the authorship process. For specifics on syntax availability reference this doc: Markdown.

  • Template Variables:

    • These allow for the addition of dynamic information based on the data that is returned from your monitor query. The available template variables will present themselves in green buttons which you can select and add into both your signal title and body.

    • Template Variables with multiple words and no connecting characters must have square brackets inside of the curly braces:

      • For example: {{First Name}} must be transformed to {{[First Name]}}.

Note: When the signal body doesn't contain any data, Avenue will add a table to the signal that displays all of the information returned by the monitor query:

In the image below we are using the firstName template variable, which is a column being returned from the monitor query, in both the title and body of the signal. Additionally we are also using markdown in the title to format the template variables data in bold.

Adjusting Based on Subscriber

At Avenue, it's possible to customize signals based on the subscriber they will be sent to. This allows for tailored notifications and formatting depending on individual needs. For example, an email might be sent to a manager who wants regular updates about issues being handled, while the actual issue may be assigned and sent via Slack to another user responsible for resolving it. When adding a subscriber in Avenue, select "Customize Formatting and Notifications" to adjust signals according to each subscriber's preferences.
